Circular Valorization of Mediterranean Olive By-Products and Insect Meals for Feed, Functional Additives, Sustainable Packaging and Biogas (OLIWA Project)

The EU-PRIMA-funded OLIWA project aims to valorize Mediterranean olive by-products through circular economy approaches, transforming waste into valuable resources for animal nutrition, functional additives, sustainable packaging, and renewable energy. A key focus is the bioconversion of olive residues using black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) to produce insect meals for animal feed. The project also investigates the recovery of bioactive compounds, particularly polyphenols and triterpenes, and evaluates their combined effects with insect meals on gut health and animal product quality through in vitro studies, animal models, and trials in poultry and fish. Additionally, OLIWA develops biodegradable packaging using olive-derived materials and insect by-products and assesses biogas production from organic residues. By integrating feed, material, and energy applications, the project promotes resource efficiency, waste reduction, and a more sustainable Mediterranean bioeconomy.
