12-month, full-time (40 hours/week), term, non-tenure track position.

The incumbent will conduct research on developing improved trapping and pest management tool for the khapra beetle (KB), Trogoderma granarium (Coleoptera: Dermestidae). The KB is quarantine insect for the USA, so all direct work with KB will be conducted by the incumbent at the USDA APHIS PPQ Otis Laboratory in Buzzards Bay, MA. Thus the incumbent will work with USDA collaborators at the Otis Lab but be part of the KSU research group of Dr. Tom Phillips in Kansas. The primary objective is to evaluate new trapping and lure options for KB, which has not received research attention for many decades. USDA APHIS PPQ pest survey efforts rely on trapping and detection tools to detect exotic insects when they are introduced. This project will evaluate new traps, baits and lures included potential for “bait and kill” strategies for kb to improve current survey tools. Additionally, studies will be conducted with pheromones and other behavior to monitor and possible mitigate pest populations of KB.  Incumbent may supervise one or more technical staff, maintain insect colonies and manipulate insects experimentally, write specific experimental protocols, order supplies, maintain relevant laboratory equipment, write scientific reports and deliver poster and oral presentations about this work at scientific conferences.
