Integrated Pest Management, Biological Control, Insect Ecology
Bio Brief
My background is in insect ecology, insect behavior, and biological control, particularly of aphids. I am interested in developing improved IPM programs for the management of insect pests of field crops on the High Plains, particularly in the integration of biological control with other control tactics. Examples include host plant resistance, agronomic and cultural practices, and insecticide seed treatments, all of which are important components of field crops IPM with the potential to interact with biological control agents and impact beneficial species.
Education
M.S. Pest Management, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby BC Canada,
Ph.D. Entomology, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby BC Canada,
Post Doctoral Associate , University of Florida, Citrus Research and Education C, 1996 - 2002.
Research
My research program has several areas of focus. One is the ecology and behavior of lady beetle species that are important biological control agents of cereal aphids on the High Plains, primarily Hippodamia convergens and Coleomegilla maculata. Recent work has addressed maternal and paternal effects in these species and explored mate choice criteria and their fitness consequences. Another focus is on the biology and management of insect pests of commercial sunflower, a crop that requires intensive insect management. I also collaborate on a range of biological control research projects in a number of different countries.
