English Grain Aphid

Sitobion avenae

English grain aphids vary in color from pale green to yellowish-green or yellow, and even orange or reddish-brown. They are among the largest of aphids to be found on wheat, significantly larger than greenbugs, with antennae that are slightly longer than half the length of the body. They have long legs and are the only aphid on wheat with long, black cornicles. They may be found feeding within wheat heads right up until maturity and may cause some kernels to shrivel. Although they are ubiquitous in Kansas wheat, they do not normally cause economic damage.
