Pale Western Cutworm

Agrotis orthogonia

The pale western cutworm occurs from the western High Plains to the Pacific and from Canada to New Mexico. In Kansas, it's been a sporadic problem in extreme western counties, but its damage can be devastating to localized areas. It is a more consistent problem in the northern plains states and southern Canada. Outbreaks are usually associated with a series of dry winters.
